![]() Sei whale, Balaenoptera borealis, surfacing in waters of the Corcovado Gulf, near Melinka, Chile. Recent records suggest this species occurs intermittently in the area, often in appreciable numbers during the austral summer. Long-term research conducted by the FormosaCetus Research and Conservation Group showed these dolphins to be distinct and isolated from con-specifics in adjacent waters and to number fewer than 70 individuals. Without immediate and effective mitigation of the main threats are likely to be extirpated in the near future.
